Course Overview

This eight-session course, based on Dr. Mark Witwer's book Teaching Christianly, is designed to help new and seasoned teachers consider how Christian faith meaningfully shapes both what and how they teach. Participants will explore how instruction, relationships, daily practices, and assessment can encourage students toward deeper love for God and neighbor—while extending grace to themselves and others and remaining attentive to the work of the Holy Spirit. As a collaborative learning workshop, this course is designed to foster community, provide individual support for educators, and boost collaboration and networking among staff.

The required book for this course, Teaching Christianly, is included and must be read in order to complete the course.

Curriculum & Learning Objectives

The Teaching Christianly course is structured into eight strategic sessions designed to move your staff from a biblical foundation to practical, everyday application.

  • Session 1: Inviting Students to Joy - Participants will articulate how their course vision can offer purpose, hope, or joy to themselves and their students.
  • Session 2: A Christian Perspective on Subject Matter – Participants will analyze what their course communicates about what is most important.
  • Session 3: Meaningful Relationships Between Faith and Subject Matter – Participants will distinguish between incidental and meaningful biblical integration.
  • Session 4: The Big Ideas – Participants will identify discipline-specific Big Ideas and apply them to their grade level or context.
  • Session 5: Thinking Christianly about Teaching Practices – Participants will distinguish between teaching practices shaped primarily by secular aims and those motivated by Christian faith.
  • Session 6: Where the Rubber Meets the Road – Participants will compile and examine practices that exemplify teaching Christianly.
  • Session 7: Grading Practices – Participants will evaluate grading practices through the lens of biblical values.
  • Session 8: What Matters Most – Participants will define faithful measures of success in Christian teaching and develop an action plan.
